Walsall Schools Transform Leadership and Talent Retention Through Strengths-Based Approach with Doncaster Expertise

St. Martin’s Trust in Walsall has revolutionised its leadership and talent retention strategies by embracing Gallup’s CliftonStrengths framework. Supported by Doncaster-based Gallup Certified CliftonStrengths Coach Craig Parkinson, this initiative has enhanced staff engagement, reduced turnover, and fostered a thriving school culture.

The collaboration highlights the region’s commitment to innovation in education, with Doncaster’s expertise making an impact far beyond its local boundaries.

Unlocking Potential Through Strengths-Based Leadership

“At St. Martin’s Trust, we’ve seen how a strengths-based approach can unlock potential and create a collaborative culture,” said Ben Davis, CEO. “Aligning roles with individual talents not only improves job satisfaction but also delivers better outcomes for children.”

The Trust Leaders’ strengths—Positivity, Communication, Developer, Includer, and Harmony—shaped an inclusive, supportive environment. For example, Developer nurtured staff and student potential, while Harmony maintained a collaborative work environment by resolving conflicts effectively.

Transforming Leadership and Staff Engagement

This approach extended to school leaders, empowering them to align their strengths with their responsibilities. For instance, a headteacher with Discipline and Relator strengths developed effective systems for monitoring provision while fostering meaningful relationships. Similarly, a leader with Communication and Strategic strengths enhanced feedback processes, fostering trust and openness within their team.

Teachers and support staff also benefited. A teacher with Ideation and Input strengths transformed lesson planning and curriculum design, influencing the school’s culture and outcomes. By aligning roles with strengths, schools created an environment where staff felt valued and engaged.

Retention Through Recognition

Retention challenges were tackled by ensuring regular strengths-based conversations, helping staff align their roles with their natural talents. This approach reduced burnout and fostered long-term commitment, with teachers taking on roles that matched their strengths and creating opportunities for growth.

“Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute meaningfully,” added Davis. “When staff thrive, the entire school community thrives.”
