What Business Owners Realised When They Finally Stopped for a Few Hours
Running a business rarely leaves much room to stop and think.
Most days are spent answering emails, chasing work, speaking to customers and dealing with whatever challenge appears next. Even when the working day ends, many business owners find it difficult to switch off.
This was something that came up very quickly when we recently ran a reflection and planning workshop with Chamber members.
As soon as one person mentioned how hard it was to switch their mind off from work, the rest of the room immediately agreed. It was one of those moments where everyone realised they weren’t the only one feeling that way.
In smaller businesses especially, it’s easy to carry everything yourself. Decisions, follow-ups, admin, sales conversations — it all sits in the same head. Over time that can make even successful businesses feel exhausting to run.
One of the most valuable parts of the session wasn’t a complicated framework or a long planning process. It was simply giving people the chance to step back for a few hours and look at their business from a distance.
We asked people to reflect on three simple questions:
-
What’s working well right now?
-
What isn’t working as well as it could?
-
What might you want to try next?
They sound straightforward, but they become surprisingly powerful when you give them proper thinking time.
Later in the session we introduced an exercise called the “5 Whys”. It’s a simple way of digging beneath a goal to understand what’s really driving it.
Often when we first state a goal, the reason behind it is quite surface level - something like growing the business, increasing revenue, or creating more opportunities. But when you keep asking why that matters, you often uncover something deeper.
Sometimes it’s about having more time with family.
Sometimes it’s about financial security.
Sometimes it’s about proving something to yourself.
Understanding that deeper reason matters, because when business inevitably becomes difficult, as it sometimes does, that deeper “why” is what helps keep people moving forward.
If you want to try a simple version of the reflection exercise yourself, take 30 minutes this week and ask:
-
What felt heavy in the business this year?
-
What felt energising?
-
What would you like next year to feel more like?
Those three questions alone can help highlight what’s working, what needs attention, and what direction you want the business to move in next.
Sometimes the most useful thing a business owner can do isn’t push harder.
It’s simply creating a little space to step back and think clearly about the business they’re building.
