‘Crafty Nook’ Enterprise Shop unveiled at Communication Specialist College Doncaster
The Crafty Nook, housed within the Warde Aldam Centre at CSCD – part of Doncaster Deaf Trust - has been purpose-built by combining and renovating two changing rooms at the site, to provide students with additional opportunities to learn new creative and enterprise skills.
Joinery students at the college played a key role in the shop’s creation, assisting with the store’s design as well as sanding and painting wood to make shelving, while CSCD enterprise students and staff have helped with stocking the store, pricing and finishing touches.
Tracey Jamison, principle of CSCD, said: “We are so excited to have unveiled our new enterprise shop at the college.
“Our students have long made lots of wonderful products to sell to the public, but what began with very humble beginnings as a porter cabin has now been transformed into a fantastic, purpose-built hub that provides a welcoming retail space for staff and students to thrive in.”
Staffed by enterprise students on selected days of the week, the shop is only open for Doncaster Deaf Trust students and staff. However, it will be open to the public during events such as next year’s summer fayre.
Tracey added: “We have no doubt that the new-look shop is going to enhance our students’ learning experiences and entrepreneurial skills.
“The new space represents more than just bricks and mortar, it’s a symbol of growth, opportunity, and belief in what our students can achieve.”
The Crafty Nook’s unveiling follows the opening of a brand-new greenhouse at CSCD, to support its thriving horticulture department and provide an inclusive, therapeutic learning environment for students.
Located on Doncaster Deaf Trust’s 24-acre site, the new greenhouse complements existing planting beds, orchards, and the award-winning show garden. It will play a vital role in delivering practical learning experiences, supporting students in achieving accredited qualifications such as City & Guilds Level 1 and 2 in Practical Horticulture Skills.
