On 6 May, Doncaster goes to the polls to choose a Mayor with important responsibilities in relation to transport, skills and public health. The elected Doncaster Mayor is a very important role and has the responsibility and opportunity to set out and implement an ambitious and exciting strategic vision for the economy of the area, supporting people, firms and institutions. As the campaign for the election gains momentum, Doncaster Chamber are hosting a husting (via zoom) for candidates to set out their plans to respond to the pandemic and their recovery strategy for the region with particular reference to infrastructure, innovation and business.
Doncaster Chamber CEO Dan Fell said, “The Elected Mayor is arguably the most powerful position in our borough.
“Over the last ten years, Team Doncaster partners have achieved a lot for our borough and, pre-Covid, Doncaster was one of the fastest growing places for private sector job growth in the UK. Looking ahead, it is absolutely imperative that the needs of the business community and the economy are at the top of the local political agenda. Without a strong a vibrant private sector, we will not be able to address other key issues in the borough including education, health and wellbeing, and the climate crisis. It is therefore critical that the borough has leadership that will champion local business and work with partners to deliver a business friendly environment.
“We are therefore urging all candidates for the Mayoral Election to attending our virtual hustings on 26th April as a way of engaging with the Doncaster business community, setting out their vision for Doncaster, and explaining how they will make Doncaster a great place to do business.
“We know that issues such as skills, infrastructure investment, town centres, business support and net zero are critically important to the business community.
“This is a great opportunity for the business community to engage directly with the candidates and to take a view on who will best serve the interests of Doncaster’s diverse business community.”
The Chamber is apolitical and will look forward to working closely and constructively with whoever Doncaster’s Mayor is on 7 May in the interests of the borough and our business community.
