Description
Doncaster is bidding to be the home of the headquarters of Great British Railways (GBR), the new body that will run our railways.
Securing it would bring huge benefits not just to South Yorkshire but to surrounding areas. Directly, it will create a significant number of high skilled and high wage employment opportunities adding to the skills base of the Region and areas around it. It will also need suppliers, generating business for firms from the wider area.
Indirectly, with the Region already being a major rail cluster as the home of over two hundred rail and engineering companies, having the headquarters based in South Yorkshire would demonstrate confidence in the Region as a centre of rail excellence by the Government. This will help to attract investment from across the globe, again creating business and jobs in supply chains around the North.
A national headquarters based in the area would provide enhanced status and recognition and be a vital piece of levelling up.
We are up against a lot of competition and, whilst we are confident that Doncaster more than satisfies the criteria, we need to demonstrate public and business support for the bid.
This roundtable is an opportunity to discuss how the business community will benefit from having the headquarters in the area and what support you and fellow business leaders can give to make this happen.
There will also be an opportunity to hear about DigiRail, an ERDF funded project that aims to introduce suppliers to the rail sector and develop products already being supplied into the industry. This particular project is aimed at any SME based in the Sheffield LEP area which includes Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield and Barnsley. Companies within the area can get up to 35 hours of support and product development for free. This is delivered by Unipart Rail in Doncaster and the University of Birmingham.
Past roundtable discussions have included: Town Centre Planning, Brexit, Digital Connectivity, Wellbeing in the Workplace and Skills and Education Initiatives.
